But what do you look for when buying fresh shrimp? When buying fresh shrimp from a seafood stand or fishmonger, you must consider three things. This is what to look for when you are shopping for fresh shrimp.
Smell – fresh shrimp should smell slightly salty and fresh, like the ocean. If the shrimp has a pungent smell or smells like ammonia, it has spoiled and isn’t safe to eat.
Storage – fresh seafood must be kept on ice or in a fridge to prevent them from dying and rotting. Shrimp cannot survive outside the water for as long as mussels or oysters. However, it is likely already rancid if the shrimp is stored in the sun or in a bowl of melted ice.
Color – most shrimp is grey when raw. However, the color of the shrimp should be vibrant. If the shrimp looks dull or dry, it is no longer safe to eat. Furthermore, the shrimp should be plump and juicy. Shriveled shrimps are likely also going bad.

When you arrive home, put the shrimp in a bowl with ice and place the shrimp in the refrigerator until you want to cook them. If you don’t plan on cooking it within the next 48 hours, it will be safer to freeze the shrimp. Rinse the shrimps and put them on a baking sheet in the freezer until frozen solid. Then transfer the shrimps to a freezer bag and write the date on the bag.
